How to Build an Org Chart in monday.com

monday.com does not give you an organizational chart out of the box. If your team, HR data or company directory already lives in monday.com boards, you have two options: maintain a separate org chart tool by hand, or generate the chart from the board data you already keep up to date.

This guide covers the second option using Capable Org Chart Builder, a monday.com marketplace app with 1,000+ installs and a 4.6-star rating. If you are still weighing tools, see our honest comparison of monday.com’s native org chart, the marketplace apps and Lucidchart.

Why build your org chart from board data?

A drawn org chart (in PowerPoint, a whiteboard tool, or a dedicated chart app) goes stale the day someone joins, leaves or changes teams. A chart generated from a monday.com board updates when the board does, and the board is something your team already maintains.

It also means the chart can show whatever your board knows about each person: title, location, contact details, start date, or any other column.

What you’ll need

  1. A monday.com account with permission to install marketplace apps.
  2. Your team data, either already in a board or ready to enter into the app’s template.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Install the app and create the template board

Install Capable Org Chart Builder from the monday.com marketplace. The install process guides you through creating a board from the app’s template, which comes with the fields the chart needs.

Step 2: Add departments and team members

Add your people to the template board, one item per person, organised into departments however suits your company.

Set each person’s “Reports To” field to their manager. These connections are the whole hierarchy: the app auto-generates the visual chart from them, so there is nothing to drag around or lay out by hand.

Step 4: Customize the view

The chart is driven entirely by your board data, and you can shape what it shows:

  • Custom fields: display up to 4 columns from your board on each person’s card, such as title, location or contact info.
  • Assistants: show executive or team assistants next to their associated person rather than in the reporting line.
  • Stacked view: switch direct reports to a stacked layout for a more compact chart in larger teams.
  • Placeholders: add future hires, open positions and people who are not monday.com users, so the chart reflects the real organisation.

This also makes the chart useful for planning: model a restructure or an expansion by editing board items, before any of it is announced.

Step 5: Export and share

Export the chart as a PDF or PNG with your branding in one click, ready for a board deck, an investor update or your company wiki. Anyone with access to the board can view the chart in monday.com itself.

FAQs

Do all team members need monday.com accounts? No. People on the chart are board items, not monday.com users, so you can include everyone in the organisation regardless of who has a seat.

Can I show more than the name and title? Yes, up to 4 custom fields from your board can appear on each card.

Can I plan a reorganisation with it? Yes. Because the chart is generated from board data, you can duplicate the board, model the new structure there, and export both versions to compare.
